Jewlery Sale Friday
We are making jewelry tonight in AV 6-2 after 8ish. Please come by and help if you are free.
Can anyone help sell jewelry on Friday??
Remember, the more money we get, the better our show will look and be. Plus it's a good way to get to know each other and get closer.

Poster, Site, and Fundraising
Please provide Crystal with the information she has requested ASAP.
We plan to have some content on the site immediately, and to flesh it out in greater detail in mid to late April (at which time you should all have more to show!!!)
Some additional thoughts on fundraising (this becomes an issue in that we have no funding for food at the reception, nor for paint or other supplies to get the space prepared):
1. The most promising avenue to my mind is to do something in conjunction with the upcoming Zombie Dance. Folks suggested: LED jewelry, a beer tent, and Zombie makeup service. Bow volunteered to check with Neil Fridd with regard to what is already in the works in relation to that event and how we might interface with it and turn a profit.
2. Bow is open to making T-Shirts at cost (thanks in advance for the free labor Bow!) I personally guaranteed a sales volume of 16 at $10 each, thus netting us $80 since cost is $5 per shirt. Who knows? These may prove popular. Particularly if we all start wearing them around campus until we all start to smell bad. Friends and colleagues will be begging us to let them buy us replacement shirts.
3. Helen has once again pledged to auction her mountain bike. An auction remains an option, provided we have stuff to auction.
4. LED jewelry could be sold at CCN at any point during the semester.
5. Pet rocks, perhaps with embedded LED’s, might be all the rage this spring.
6. When it comes to fundraising the sky is the limit, but we must start somewhere. Beer certainly offers us the best profit margin.

Fundraising Ideas
Please comment here with any fundraising ideas you have. We can discuss it further in one of our meetings.
This Wednesday
-We are going to be discussing advertisements and main designing theme of the show. Please bring in any materials, drawings/sketches, ideas, etc. to talk about. (We will most likely not have access to a computer so keep that in mind).
-We also need to discuss fundraising, as soon as possible! Especially since there won't be much money for food, if any. We need to come up with ideas and we also need to execute them as soon as possible, since its getting very late in the game. I will make a post soon for people to comment to with their ideas so we have a running start for the discussion.
Just on an odd not: I came home this weekend and I have this box of wires. The wires are all bunched up together and it looks insane. I must have been looking for something last week because its like falling out of the box. But when I looked at it I felt like it was a blob of something that I could imagine moving. Like I am waiting for a wire to pop out and use itself to start dragging the rest of the blob across the room kind of like in the remake of The Fly. Maybe its something to think about for the show. Like the use of old wires to make 'life' or a new species.

Getting together
I thought it might be fun if we go out to talk more about the projects/show. Maybe after class, especially for the PR team cause we need to get together. It would be cool to meet up at a bar or something and this would also be a good way to get to know each other better. The whole class is welcome.
I am usually free after class and would be willing to go then maybe from 8:30-10. or else I am also free thurs nights (after 9 but w/o a ride though) and the whole weekend. We could car pool (my ride could fit another 2-3 people).
Anyone interested in going out to a bar or restaurant? Perhaps this wednesday or next? And if it goes well maybe it could be a regular thing.
just an idea

Lectures on the 27th and the 5th
We've got two lectures coming up which should be of great interest to all:
February 27 at 6:30pm in Visual Arts Perception Lab, Room 1016
Rainer Ganahl
http://www.ganahl.info/
and the following week:
Torsten Zenas Burns
Wednesday, March, 5, 6:30 pm @ the Neuberger Museum
URL: http://holyokeresearch.blogspot.com
Of course, attending visiting artist lectures is not our sole raison d'etre. Let's plan on meeting after the lectures, perhaps in a more informal setting, to discuss where we are going and how we intend to get there. Tempus Fugit!!!
Best,
Jon

Poster Idea/ Show Title/ Video help available

Hola amigos y amigas!
Just throwing ideas out:
So I wanted to do a rough sketch of an idea based on our discussion last week. Two images people came up which were an electronic flower and using LEDs in the poster. The idea with this poster is that the sun has some LED's in it and maybe the flower would too. The area where the on/off switch is meant to look like behind the sheet rock of a wall with beams and wires exposed etc. We could off course use a real on/off switch but that might be expensive. Anywho, just wanted to get the ball rolling.
As far as titles, I guess I'm honestly not too crazy about having evolution in the title. I think the word is used A LOT these days. How about, "Turn On" , "Push the Button" , "Flip the Switch" , "BlackOut" ...These are ideas that would go well with the poster I guess.
Also, if anyone needs any help with a video shoot I'd be happy to help. I'll probably need some help too at some point so don't be afraid to ask.
OK, see ya at future farmers...

Does anyone know anything about VJing/VJ programs
My project consists of recording someone live through a webcam while keying their background out and interlacing that recording with pre-recorded videos. Then I would like to display the last 4 ‘interlaced’ videos. All of which should be fairly automatic. So anyone have any idea.
The program would definitely need to be able to do realtime keying.
Thanks everyone,
Ness

Evolution
Recycling your old CD players:
Could I ask anyone who has an old portable CD player that they don’t use any more, to donate it to my project? I am looking to collect 5 – 7 of them if possible. My project will use MP3 downloads and CD’s. It would be greatly appreciated. :-)

Flash help!!
I really need help from anyone that knows anything because there doesn't seem like any of the teachers have worked with flash and video/webcam :( .
So here's my project:
I need to capture video from a webcam after it detects motion (or it might be easier to capture a few frames rather than straight up video) then I need it to key out the color green because the person will be in front of a green screen.
Then I have to put the last 4 videos captured up in a 4 split screen (to look like a surviellence video) where they will replay in front of another video.
No one has been able to help me with this. I am working in Actionscript 3.0. If you can offer any help that would be great. Even if you know a website that could help.
Thanks guys.

APPLICATION DEADLINE FEBRUARY 6!!!
Purchase College
Senior Project Support Award
The objective of the New Media Senior Project Support Award is to permit worthy but expensive senior projects to be carried forward. There will be a second round for applications in the Spring if money is available.
A. APPLICATION PROCEDURE
1. The application deadline is February 6. Please deliver to Fern Becker in the Natural Sciences Office.
2. In the application special attention should be paid to a justification of all budget items. Also, the narrative description of the project should be accessible to readers not in the project's area.
3. The maximum award will be $400 for individual projects and $600 for joint projects. Approved items will be ordered by the college and you plan submitting them well in advance of when they will be needed.
4. The application must be written by the student applicant and typed. Please describe your project in clear terms. Address why you must purchase the items in your budget to complete your project. Attach a itemized budget that clearly indicates how much money you are asking for and how the money will be spent.
B. REVIEW PROCEDURES AND SELECTION POLICIES
1. Members of the New Media BOS will review the applications.
2. The criteria for favorable evaluation of the applications are: high qualifications of the student, high artistic merit of the project, and high probability of completion within two semesters.
C. BUDGET AND OTHER POLICY GUIDELINES
1. Valid budget items are considered to be those that further the progress of the investigation including:
-consumable supplies such as media (dv tapes, CD’s etc.)
-equipment improvements or peripherals (please see the New Media blog for list of equipment NME already owns for student use)
-computer software that would remain in the New Media Program
-books, manuals, and publications that would remain with the BOS for use by other faculty and students
- equipment rental (lighting, props, etc.),
-transportation costs and/or "fees" central to the project
2. The following are not legitimate budget items: student transportation costs to instructional or research sites (including libraries), hiring of student assistants, and routine copying.
3. In the proposal the student should consider and evaluate the applicability of alternate, less costly experimental protocols before requesting more costly options.

Flash Question....HELP!
Goals, Objectives and Working Strategies for the Seminar
- Use each class to allow people to pose real questions related to their projects be they- technical, conceptual, theoretical, historical, or contextual
- Do work on your projects during class
- Deal with issues related to the Senior Show
- Screen works - artist documentaries, or other works related to your projects
- Go on field trips - perhaps Armory Show and DIVA
- Use class to 'bounce ideas' off the group for your projects
- Deal with issues related to the show ASAP so everyone can focus on their projects
I also laid out my goals:
- Facilitate creation of an awesome Senior Show
- Encourage and support everyone in producing excellent projects
- Guide theses to be well researched and adequately expressive of project content
- Promote collaboration on projects
- Encourage everyone to RETHINK and narrow the focus of their projects
